Fortifications

Correze consists of fortifications. The walls surrounding the church in medieval times were build to safeguard the town and the church. The fortifications initially materialised by high and thick walls surrounding the church area with two gates. There is one gate well preserved and still in standing order, this gate is called Porte Margot.  The other gate has been distroyed in wars, however the main points are still visible on the houses on the north side behind the church in an alley way.

The village had access to fresh well water, the remains are visible in an alley way on the north-west side beneath a houses overhanging first floor.

Over the centuries the walls had to be re-inforced. The walls became part of houses which expanded into large family residences over the centuries. Some of the houses did rise into high tower houses. This was part a status symbol as well as making it good view points out into the countryside and nearbouring forests. These fortifications are around a thickness of easily 1.20 metres and are still standing solidly and proudly!
